| Penn England Farm is an 850 cow dairy owned
and operated by Fred and Cindy England of Williamsburg, PA. They recently
expanded and moved from an 85 cow stall barn into a 576 free stall facility with
a double sixteen herringbone parlor. The cows are milked 3 times daily.
They are bedded with sand which is then reclaimed from the manure using a McLanahan
separator. The new facility also has a hospital area with maternity pens,
pharmacy, and separate milking area for treated cows.
Most of the herd is registered
and identified. The cows are bred towards high production and strong
type, always working to improve on the herd's genetics and pedigree lines.
The England's keep busy in
the fields as well, planting around 1300 acres of corn and 500 acres of alfalfa.
Family is very important to
the operation. A large portion of the workforce consists of their children,
brothers, nephews & nieces, as well as cousins. Their sons, Ethan and
Brandon, work on the farm as much as their Penn State class schedules permit.
Daughter Yvette is the office manager. Fred's brother Barry is the herd's
veterinarian and brother Gordon is in charge of field work and machinery. Nephew
Barry Jr is the herdsman and his wife Gwen feeds calves and works with the herd
records. Niece Tracy helps out and her husband Dan is a full time employee
who keeps busy with feeding, field work, and repairs. There are a total
of 30 employees on the farm. About 10 of these work full time hours while
the rest are part time, including several high school and college students.
